Your Excellencies,
On the 23rd of August this year, Europe will for the first time be celebrating the Day Of Remembrance of the Victims of Communism, instigated by the 23 September 2008 decision of the European Parliament. We would like to express our support of your plan to celebrate this day as a Pan-European anniversary.
This is especially important, as Europe during this autumn will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the peaceful democratic changes in the Baltic States and in Eastern and Central Europe, and of the beginning of the reunification of Europe.
We, representatives of organizations, foundations and initiatives from Europe, the United States and Canada, express our heartfelt support and readiness to support you in organizing the celebrating and commemoration of these anniversaries. It is important to all of us as Europeans to create a Month of Remembrance for these anniversaries, and to step forward in support of democracy and freedom in Europe and the world.
Signed
Mart Laar, former Prime Minister of Estonia, Founder of the FICC, Estonia
