HANOI, Feb 25, 2008 (AFP) - Vietnam, loyal ally of communist Cuba, Monday congratulated Raul Castro on becoming the island's president, calling it a sign of Cuba's determination toward the "revolutionary cause."
"The result confirms the solidarity and absolute unanimity of the Cuban party, state, National Assembly and people in their continuous determination on the revolutionary cause initiated and led by Fidel (Castro) to protect independence, nation sovereignty and build the Socialist Cuba," Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesman Le Dung said.
Dung said that Vietnam and its people "affirm their ongoing efforts to further strengthen and widen the traditional friendship, brotherhood and cooperative relationship ... between parties, states and people of Vietnam and Cuba."
Vietnam and Cuba are among only five communist countries in the world along with China, North Korea and Laos.
Castro, 76, was named to replace his ailing brother, Fidel Castro who ruled the island for almost 50 years after coming to power in a revolution.
