Miami. August 20, 2008. Cuban Democratic Directorate. On August 6, 2008, members of "Unge Høyre" or Young Conservatives, the youth wing of the Høyre (Conservative) Party in Norway held a demonstration at the city square in Molde, demanding freedom for all Cuban political prisoners and prisoners of conscience.
The youth organization planned the activity after receiving information about the case of Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta, a Cuban political prisoner who had been on hunger strike since July 18 protesting human rights violations in Holguin Provincial Prison.
"Very many people expressed their deepest concerns of about how the people are treated," according to Oliver Husøy, the local leader of the Young Conservatives who took part in the event.
The young Norwegians gathered around 300 signatures for the freedom of all Cuban political prisoners.
During an interview on Radio República, the 18 year-old Husøy offered the following message to the Cuban people:
"I would like to say to the Cuban people that there are people in the world that know what goes on in Cuba that are watching the Cuban government. We are doing everything we can to help improve their situation. I want to express our concern and that we, me and the rest of the Conservative Party in Norway, are with them in their fight for freedom. That we will not tire until Cuba is free from the rule that is today."
