Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert O Blake Saturday said the US administration would remove Maoists from the Terrorist Exclusion List if they renounce violence, stop the violent activities of its sister organisation, the Young Communist League (YCL) and actively participate and work together with other parties to support the peace process.Speaking at a press conference organised at the end of his two-day official visit to Nepal, Blake stressed the importance of cooperation from the Maoists to take the peace process to a logical conclusion.
"We think that the Maoists have made a great deal of progress. We take it important that they remain part of the democratic process even though they are in the opposition now," Blake said. "It is very important that the Maoists work with all other political parties to achieve peace."
"It is very important again that Maoists be part of the solution and they work constructively to achieve peace in Nepal," Blake added. The US Assistant Secretary also stressed the need of army integration and rehabilitation of disqualified PLA combatants. However, how that will be done is to be decided by the Nepali people, he said.
Blake had met Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and other political leaders Friday.
This is his first foreign visit after being appointed the Assistant Secretary last month. Blake is leaving for Dhaka, Bangladesh later this afternoon
