On August 5, 1994 thousands took to the streets of Havana to demand their freedom. Cubans of all ages, despite the police presence, marched chanting "Libertad" (liberty) and calling for an end to the dictatorship through various areas of the Cuban capital adjacent to the sea wall (Malecón). This action was one of the most prominent demonstrations of Cuban resistance to communism.
15 years later, the resistance is now a more pronounced and visible presence within the island. The phrase "We All Are the Resistance" is heard constantly in civic actions carried out by Cubans throughout the country.
The Assembly of the Resistance, in an initiative of the Historic Political Prisoners and of the First Congress of Cuban Political Prisoners, calls upon all Cubans to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of the "Maleconazo" as Cuban Resistance Day, on August 5, wherever they reside, in any city or country in the world.
Additionally, friends of the cause of freedom in Cuba will also mark this day in different countries.
