The article presents information on democracy in Belarus. The decline of democracy in Belarus dates from the latter months of 1996, slightly more than two years into Aleksandr Lukashenko's presidency. A constitutional crisis erupted when he announced a plan to amend the 1994 constitution that would weaken the parliament and the Constitutional Court and extend his presidential term for two years to begin when the amendments were accepted. The opposition, led by the parliamentary chair, Semen Sharetsky, responded with an attempt to impeach Lukashenko.
